General Information
What are the different types of nbn?
FTTP, FTTN, FTTB, FTTC, HFC and Fixed Wireless
How long does an nbn installation take?
FTTP, HFC, Fixed Wireless installs on average take under an hour to complete. Someone 18 years or older definitely needs to be there to meet and consult with the contractor. For FTTN/FTTB the contractor does his work on the street so they usually don’t need to visit your premise (if you can’t afford to miss a day off work, then don’t worry about it). In rare cases FTTN/FTTB contractors need access inside, if you aren’t home, then it will get rescheduled.
Which wifi modem or router do I need?
FTTP, HFC, FTTC & FW only require a wireless router, FTTN and FTTB require a wireless modem router.
What will affect my internet speed?
The speed of your internet connection depends on a number of factors including:
- your type of connection, (FTTP, FTTC, FTTN, FTTB, FW or HFC)
- modem quality
- in-home cabling
- distance between your modem and Wi-Fi devices
- electrical and Wi-Fi channel interference
- number of devices connected.
Fixed Wireless connections can also be affected by cell congestion.
Actual speeds for FW, FTTB and FTTN services to be confirmed with you.
What NBN plan speed do I need?
There are three main speed tiers for NBN plans: 25/5 (or NBN standard), 50/20 (NBN standard plus) and 100/40 (NBN premium). While a lot of people are still on 25/5 plans, most major providers and many smaller providers have stopped offering them, now using the 50/20 speed as their most popular option.
The numbers indicate the speeds of both the maximum download (e.g. streaming video) and upload rate (e.g. saving something to the cloud) a plan can achieve.
- 25/5 = 25 megabits per second download, and 5 megabits per second upload (many providers no longer offer 25/5 plans).
- 50/20 = 50 megabits per second download, and 20 megabits per second upload.
- 100/40 = 100 megabits per second download, and 40 megabits per second upload.
